(512) 240-2633Starting therapy for your kid should feel like a relief, not another budget conversation. But for a lot of families in Austin, the cost piece is the thing that turns a hopeful first phone call into months of putting it off.
We hear some version of the same story all the time. I want her to get help. I just can’t see how to fit it into the family budget. Same worry, different families, every month.
The math is real. A licensed psychologist in Austin runs $175 to $250 per session. Weekly therapy at that rate adds up fast, and the in-network options through your insurance usually have delays that stretch into next year. The good child and teen specialists in Austin are almost always private pay.
So we made the cost piece easier. Here is how.
The standard model goes like this. You find a private-pay psychologist. You pay the full session fee out of pocket every week. The practice gives you a superbill, which is a detailed receipt you submit to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement. Most PPO plans cover 50 to 80 percent of out-of-network mental health care once you meet your deductible.
The catch is the waiting. You pay your full fee on Tuesday. You file the superbill. You wait six weeks. Sometimes ten. Sometimes the reimbursement never shows up at all, because your insurance decided that particular session was not medically necessary. Meanwhile, your family budget is already carrying the full cost.
The math works in theory. In practice, it is the thing that wears families down.
Thrizer is a service that rewrites the reimbursement process for our Austin families. Instead of paying the full session fee upfront and waiting for a check, you pay only your estimated out-of-pocket cost at the time of each session. For most families, that means a fraction of the sticker price.
Here is how it works:
For a parent used to the old superbill model, the difference is real. Therapy shifts from “a $700 monthly line item we have to fight for every month” to “a manageable weekly cost we can plan around.”
Thrizer charges a small fee per session for this service. Many private-pay therapy practices in Austin pass that fee on to the client. We do not.
We absorb it on your behalf. So when you are comparing the cost of out-of-network therapy in Austin between practices, here is what matters at Little Dove Psychology: you pay only your estimated out-of-pocket cost. Nothing extra goes to Thrizer from you. The fee is part of how we run our practice.
Most families in Austin and across Texas with PPO or POS insurance plans qualify. HMO plans typically do not include out-of-network behavioral health benefits, so Thrizer’s model will not work for those plans.
The cleanest way to find out which category your plan falls into is to call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask whether you have out-of-network behavioral health coverage. The answer takes about 90 seconds. PPO and POS plans almost always qualify. HMO plans almost never do.
The full onboarding takes most families under 10 minutes.
After that, the process runs in the background. You do not have to do anything else.
Therapy works when families can actually access it consistently. Cost barriers are not just financial. They are emotional. Every time a parent has to look at a therapy line item in the family budget and decide whether this is the month it fits, the kid feels it. Therapy you have to fight to afford every month is therapy you are likely to stop too soon.
We want the math to feel less heavy so the conversations at home can feel more open. The Thrizer partnership is one piece of how we do that for Austin families and the Texas families we serve across the 42 additional PSYPACT states where we are licensed.
