Why so many evaluations start in the teen years

A lot of the teens we evaluate did fine for years. Then the work got heavier, the teachers multiplied, nobody was there to organize the backpack anymore, and the grades or the friendships started to slip. Sometimes it looks like laziness. Sometimes it looks like anxiety, or a kid who comes home and shuts down. Often the question underneath is the same: is something going on that we have been missing?

An evaluation answers that with data instead of guesswork. It tells you whether ADHD, autism, a reading disorder, or something else entirely, such as anxiety, depression, or not enough sleep, explains what you are seeing, and it gives the school a document it can act on.

What we evaluate

  • ADHD evaluation, including objective performance testing of attention, not just questionnaires.
  • Autism evaluation, which in teens often means the quieter presentation that went unnoticed in elementary school.
  • Dyslexia and reading evaluation.
  • Combined ADHD and autism evaluation, when both are real questions.

Every evaluation screens for the conditions that look like these from the outside, including anxiety, depression, and sleep problems, so the answer you get is the right one.

How it works for a teen

  1. A free 15-minute consultation with a parent. We talk about what you are seeing and whether an evaluation is the right next step.
  2. Intake interview with you and your teen. Teens get to tell their side, and they usually have a lot to say once someone asks.
  3. Rating scales from parents, your teen, and teachers. In high school we ask more than one teacher, because a teen can look very different in chemistry and in English.
  4. Testing from home, after school, in the evening, or on a weekend.
  5. Written report within 14 days of the final testing session, then a live feedback session where we walk you through the results and the recommendations.

What it costs, with or without insurance

Evaluations are billed to Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, and Oscar. With an in-network plan, most families pay well under our $1,750 self-pay fee for a full evaluation. If you have already met your deductible, the family share is usually a few hundred dollars. Before any testing is scheduled, we check your benefits, handle any prior authorization your plan requires, and give you a written estimate built from your own plan’s numbers.

Self-pay: ADHD, autism, or dyslexia and reading evaluation $1,750; combined ADHD and autism $2,500. Evaluations are HSA and FSA eligible. Plan details: Aetna, BCBS of Texas, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, and Oscar.

What a virtual evaluation can and cannot include

It can include a diagnosis, a clear picture of how it affects school and home, screening for look-alike conditions, and a report with specific recommendations for a 504 plan or IEP.

It cannot currently include a complete cognitive battery with a Full Scale IQ, or broader learning disorder assessment in written expression and math, because some of those measures need an in-person component. If your teen needs that, say so on the free consultation and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teen Evaluations

Do you test teenagers, and do you take insurance?

Yes. We evaluate teens for ADHD, autism, dyslexia and reading, and combined ADHD and autism, entirely online for families located in Texas. Evaluations are billed to Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, and Oscar. With an in-network plan, most families pay well under our $1,750 self-pay fee, and we give you a written estimate from your own plan before testing is scheduled.

Can my teen be tested for ADHD and autism at the same time?

Yes. When both are real questions, a combined ADHD and autism evaluation is usually the better choice, because the two overlap and each can hide the other. The combined evaluation is $2,500 self-pay or billed to your in-network plan.

Do you test teens for dyslexia?

Yes. Dyslexia and reading evaluations are available for teens. Our virtual model does not currently include a full cognitive battery with a Full Scale IQ or broader assessment of written expression and math, and we will tell you on the free consultation if your teen needs those.

How long does a teen evaluation take?

Appointments are typically available within one week of your first call. After an intake interview with you and your teen and online rating scales from parents and teachers, testing happens from home. The written report is ready within 14 days of the final testing session, followed by a live feedback session.

Will the report work for a 504 plan or IEP?

Yes. The report is written with schools in mind: standardized data plus specific recommended accommodations, so your school team can build or update a 504 plan or IEP. We share it with the school only with your written consent.

Does my teen need to live in Austin?

No. Evaluations are fully virtual for teens located anywhere in Texas at the time of the appointment, with after-school, evening, and weekend times.

Do you prescribe ADHD medication?

No. We are psychologists, so we do evaluation and therapy rather than medication. If the results support a medication conversation, we coordinate with your teen’s pediatrician or psychiatrist.
